Counseling
Counseling is a process involving engagement, treatment planning, intervention, monitoring, and termination.
Engagement refers to the initial development of a relationship with a
client in which they will be able to discuss areas of personal concern. At
this stage the counselor works to build a feeling of connection, safety,
trust, and non-critical understanding with the client. The establishment of
a therapeutic relationship is essential for the success of counseling.
Problem
assessment is an involved process through which an individual's present
problem is reviewed in the context of several dimensions. The history of the
problem, including any precipitating events, time of onset, and length of
time the individual has had the problem are taken into account. Other
present factors such as where the problem happens, with whom, how often,
under what circumstances, relevant exceptions, and other facets of the
presenting problem are reviewed.
